Wonder Woman 1984 heads to UK streaming for rental this January while remaining in cinemas

WONDER WOMAN 1984 is heading to UK streaming this January with a rental fee, while still playing in open cinemas, announces Warner Bros.

Wonder Woman 1984 hit UK cinemas in Tiers 1 and 2 on December 16 this week. And while the DC movie will continue to show in movie theatres, Warner Bros have announced this morning that the film will head to streaming for rental next month. The studio said in a statement: “After much anticipation, Wonder Woman 1984 is out now in cinemas in the UK and Ireland.”

Warner Bros added: “In recognition of varying current market restrictions and to service the massive fan interest in Wonder Woman 1984, this film can be enjoyed by fans and families on the big screen where available in cinemas now.

“And in the comfort of their own home through Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) in the UK and Ireland starting on January 13.

“The film will continue to be available in cinemas where they are open, whilst also being available to watch at home for a 48-hour rental from participating digital retailers.”

The move had been rumoured since the start of the month and is similar to the studio’s plan for Wonder Woman 1984’s US release.

The Gal Gadot solo sequel will simultaneously release in US movie theatres and on streaming service HBO Max on Christmas Day.

This decision leads the charge of all Warner Bros movies doing likewise in 2021.

So presumably, in the UK, the studio’s films for next year will be in cinemas before also becoming available on streaming as PVOD a month later.

Here is the current list of Warner Bros’ 2021 movies:

The Matrix 4

Wonder Woman 1984 is both a sequel and a prequel. The film follows the First World War setting of 2017’s Wonder Woman but takes place in the Eighties before the contemporary setting of Batman v Superman and Justice League.

March 2021 will see the HBO Max release for Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, which will be a four-part miniseries, followed by a version combining those episodes into a single blockbuster.

Since HBO Max isn’t available in the UK, presumably the film will be available on PVOD or have international rights sold to a streaming distributor.

But then, of course, there’s Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 to consider.

Back in January 2019, Jenkins said that Wonder Woman 3 will be a contemporary story. However, it could well be set in the future too.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the director said: “I’m not set, but I’m not dying to do another period piece.

“[Setting it in the future is] definitely one of the things we talked about. I’m not planning to put it in the past again, because where are you going to go?

“You have to go forward. It’s definitely a contemporary story. That’s all I can say. Where we put it and how that gets figured out, I haven’t totally nailed down.”
