One of Jim Carrey's most iconic roles (that Nicolas Cage missed out on) is about to be streaming completely for free.
1994's Dumb and Dumber is officially about to become the latest addition to the Tubi streaming library. The hit buddy comedy starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels is set to begin streaming on Tubi for free on July 1.
Directed by Peter Farrelly from a screenplay co-written alongside Bobby Farrelly and Bennett Yellin, Dumb and Dumber starred Carrey and Daniels as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two dimwitted best friends and roommates who embark upon a road trip to return a briefcase belonging to Lauren Holly's Mary Swanson, a woman who left her briefcase in Lloyd's possession accidentally. Over the course of the film, the duo get into a whole host of slapstick shenanigans, get swept up in a criminal conspiracy, and unwittingly end up saving the day.
Dumb and Dumber was largely dismissed by critics upon its release, yet was an instant hit with fans. The film ended up bringing in over $247 million against a budget of only $17 million during its original theatrical run, and even received an animated follow-up series in 1995 courtesy of Hanna-Barbera. In 2003, a prequel film was released in the form of Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, with Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen taking the film's leading roles. The latest entry in the franchise came in 2014 in the form of Dumb and Dumber To, which saw Carrey and Daniels finally return to their iconic roles from the original film.
How Nicolas Cage Nearly Starred in Dumb and Dumber
Back in May, Hollywood icon Nicolas Cage discussed being approached for the role of Harry Dunne, which he turned down in order to appear in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas. "I remember when Jim [Carrey] wanted me to do it. I was at the Chateau Marmont, rehearsing with Mike Figgis, getting ready for Leaving Las Vegas, which was a conflict with Dumb and Dumber," Cage recalled. "I'm glad they made their movie and I'm happy for them, but I think I made the right choice." Cage went on to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as screenwriter Ben Sanderson in Leaving Las Vegas.
Dumb and Dumber will be available for streaming on Tubi beginning July 1.
