Shakira Says Pal Chris Martin ‘Was Checking in Every Day’ When She and Gerard Piqué Separated: ‘He Was There for Me’

Shakira leaned on Chris Martin after her split from Gerard Piqué in 2022.

In a new Rolling Stone cover story, the "Hips Don't Lie" artist, 47, opened up about how the Coldplay bandleader, 47, helped her amid her split from her ex-partner, 37.

"He was there for me when I got separated and was heartbroken,” said Shakira of Martin, following her breakup from the Spanish footballer. “He was checking in every day to see how I was doing, sending me words of support and strength and wisdom."

Of the "Yellow" hitmaker, she added: "I see him as a person who sees life through a different lens, who’s sensitive to other people’s needs and very empathetic, very empathetic.”

Shakira and Piqué were together for 11 years before their highly publicized split in 2022, which was followed by cheating rumors that surfaced a year later. The pair share two children, sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9.

In a July 2024 cover story with Rolling Stone, the "Waka Waka" performer opened up about the emotional toll it took on her.

"The suffering I felt was probably the greatest I had ever experienced in my entire life, and it kept me from functioning at times,” Shakira explained.

The pain made her feel even more vulnerable, as she noted: "It felt like someone had stabbed a hole in my chest. And the sensation was so real, almost physical. I physically felt like I had a hole in my chest and that people could see through me."

In an October cover story with GQ Spain, Shakira discussed the impact that her first album in seven years, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don't Cry Anymore), had on her healing journey.

"For many months after my separation I had been silent, trying to begin my mourning, but I couldn't really begin to grieve until I started writing music," she told the outlet. "It was my way of healing. And it continues to be. Grief is a process that is not linear. It is full of peaks and valleys."
