When Shakira was down after her 2022 breakup with Gerard Piqué, there was one A-list friend who was always lifting her up. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer is grateful for their support while she was picking up the pieces of her 11-year relationship which ended due to the soccer star’s reported infidelity.
Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was Shakira’s ride-or-die pal during that sad time in her life. “He was there for me when I got separated and was heartbroken,” the 47-year-old superstar told Rolling Stone. “He was checking in every day to see how I was doing, sending me words of support and strength and wisdom.” She couldn’t stop gushing about the “Fix You” singer, who is “sensitive to other people’s needs and very empathetic, very empathetic.”

Shakira’s split from the former FC Barcelona star after he engaged in an alleged affair with 23-year-old Clara Chia Marti and even brought her to the couple’s Barcelona, Spain home. After the breakup, Shakira threw herself into her music with a scathing revenge song, “BZRP Music Sessions #53” with DJ Bizarre which aired the dirty laundry from their relationship.
“I’ve been putting out music here and there, but it was really hard for me to put together a body of work,” Shakira told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in March about her album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. “I didn’t have time. It was the husband factor. Now I’m husbandless. Yeah, the husband was dragging me down. Now I’m free. Now I can actually work.” Still, Piqué was more nonchalant about the breakup after breaking his silence for the first time in October 2024.
“I’m very chill about it all,” he told CNN en Español. “I know people like to have their points of view on things …. but in the end, the truth [wasn’t told] the way it happened. This, I cannot control.” Well, there’s always his side, her side, and the truth somewhere in between!
It’s evident that Martin’s friendship with Shakira was the emotional support she needed. Hollywood can sometimes be a cold place, but Martin was the warm shoulder for Shakira to cry on.
