Shakira and Chris Martin bonded while she was going through her acrimonious split from her husband Gerard Piqué.
'He was there for me when I got separated and was heartbroken,' the Colombian singer told Rolling Stone for the Fix You singer's cover story.
'He was checking in every day to see how I was doing, sending me words of support and strength and wisdom.'
The two singers, both 47, have been friends for a long time, and the Hips Don't Lie songstress had very complimentary words for her pal.
'I see him as a person who sees life through a different lens, who's sensitive to other people's needs and very empathetic,' she added.
Shakira split from Piqué, with whom she shares sons Milan, 11, and Sasha, nine, in 2022 amid rumors that the soccer star was cheating on her with his now-girlfriend, Clara Chía Martí.

Chris knows what it is like to weather a public split as he went through his much publicized 'conscious uncoupling' from Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, in 2014 after 11 years of marriage and two children Apple, 20, and Moses, 18.
Chris and Shakira's friendship goes all the way back to when she appeared on season six of The Voice and the Coldplay lead singer did a stint as a guest mentor.
In 2018, long before her split from Piqué she shared a sweet birthday tribute on Facebook.
'Happy birthday Chris Martin, and thanks for being there for me when I needed you,' she wrote at the time.
Shakira was on to something when she called her friend an 'empathetic' person. Elsewhere in the interview, the Green Eyes singer talked about peace.
'When I’m saying these things about world peace, I’m also talking about my own inside.' Martin said.
'It’s a daily thing not to hate yourself. Forget about outside critics — it’s the inside ones, too.'
With that type of self-awareness it is not a surprise that Martin has a strong reaction to becoming an empty-nester.

'It's sad. That's the only word,' he admitted, adding, 'But of course, it’d be weirder if they were still like, "I can’t leave." Then you’d be more worried.'
Both Apple and Moses are college students, with the former attending Vanderbilt University and the latter a freshman at Brown.
Martin also revealed how he teases his son Moses. 'I like [my kids] very much. Even though they're not biologically mine – I'm breaking the story now,' he joked.
'My favorite new thing to embarrass my son is, if we’re walking down the street and someone comes up to us and they say, "I’m sorry to disturb you while you’re with your son," I say, "That’s not my son. That’s my partner,"' he said laughing.
'Yeah. I like them a lot. I think they are mine, to be fair,' he said.
And while Martin and Paltrow co-parent comfortably and remain friends, the same cannot be said for Shakira and her ex.
In October, the pro soccer player accused the Colombian bombshell of misleading the public about the disintegration of their relationship.
'In the end, the truth or what happens or occurs is not told in the way it was. I cannot control this,' Pique told CNN.

In 2022, Spanish outlet El Periodico reported that the couple had been living separately for a few weeks after Pique was kicked out of the family home by the pop star.
In the summer of 2023, Pique reportedly moved in with Clara Chia- in the home he had shared with Shakira when she first moved to Barcelona.
In January 2023, video footage emerged which is said to show Gerard's new girlfriend in the footballer's family home before his split from Shakira.
Shakira was reportedly left 'devastated' at the unearthed footage from August 2021, which was recorded ten months before she announced she had split from her partner of 11 years.
Gerard's new girlfriend Clara appears to be in the background of a zoom interview the footballer did from his family home in Barcelona, while Shakira was reportedly abroad with their two children.
Clara is an employee of Pique's company Kosmos.
