Cuoco appreciated the idea of Penny choosing not to have children, feeling it sent a strong, independent message. But the writers had other plans, leading to a surprise pregnancy that left fans and Cuoco divided. Showrunner Steve Holland admitted that the decision to make Penny pregnant wasn’t perfectly executed. He asserted, reflecting on the abruptness of the reveal:
We talked about whether there were other ways to do it, like what if she had a pregnancy scare that turned out to be false and she was disappointed. We talked about ways to get her to that moment that didn’t feel quite so abrupt.
Despite this, Holland believed the twist provided a neat callback to the show’s very first episode, when Leonard famously predicted, “Our babies will be smart and beautiful.”
