Miley Cyrus Finally Puts Rumors to Rest That Her Gold ‘Flowers’ Dress Was a Nod to Jennifer Lawrence

Miley Cyrus is speaking her truth.

In 2023, the pop star released the music video for her song, "Flowers." The video, which has amassed over 1 billion views on YouTube since its release, opened with a shot of Cyrus wearing a vintage, gold lamé Saint Laurent gown with an oversize hood and ab cutouts — a gown that looked similar to a dress that Lawrence wore on the red carpet for the 2012 premiere of The Hunger Games.

For the 2012 movie premiere, Lawrence also wore a gold lamé gown by Prabal Gurung that also had ab cutouts. During the premiere, the actress posed for photos alongside costars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, the latter of whom Cyrus was in an on-and-off relationship with at the time.

Around the time of The Hunger Games premiere, rumors circulated that Cyrus and Hemsworth broke up because he cheated on Cyrus with Lawrence, leading fans to believe that the gold "Flowers" dress was a dig at the actress.

Cyrus, however, recently confirmed that the rumor is untrue. While signing autographs outside of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a fan asked her, "Was your flowers dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?"

The singer responded, "No, but I love that dress of hers."

Lawrence addressed the dress drama in 2023 during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen while playing "Plead the Fifth."

"There was already a lot of talk that the music video was referencing a secret fling that you had with Liam Hemsworth while he was with Miley Cyrus," Cohen asked. "Can you please respond to this?"

"I would love to: Not true, total rumor," the No Hard Feelings star replied. "I mean, we all know me and Liam, like, kissed one time. It was years after they'd broke up," she added, in reference to the kiss they shared in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.

"So I just assumed that was, like, a coincidence," Lawrence concluded.

Cyrus and Hemsworth's on-again-off-again relationship began in 2009 while filming The Last Song — the couple got engaged in 2012, but postponed their wedding in April 2013 and called off their engagement in September of that year.

By 2016, Hemsworth and Cyrus got back together and got engaged. The former couple tied the knot in December of 2018, but separated less than a year later in August 2019. Their divorce was finalized in February 2020.

Cyrus is currently dating musician Maxx Morando, while Hemsworth is dating actress Gabriella Brooks. Lawrence married her husband, Cooke Maroney, in 2019; they share two children.
