Jennifer Lawrence is one of the most accomplished actors in the world, and she is also a millennial. This is someone who spent a large part of the 2010s acting as the relatable goofball at red-carpet events, photobombing Taylor Swift, stumbling up the stairs to collect Oscars and responding to entertainment reporters with things like, “I can see you talking, but all I can think about is getting fries!”
There are countless BuzzFeed listicles—a millennial’s preferred mode of journalism—dedicated to these endearing quirks. Often these are packaged with headlines like “21 Times Jennifer Lawrence Totally Nailed The Whole Interview Thing,” and most of them are illustrated with animated GIFs. And though much has been made of Lawrence’s subtle but significant pivot towards playing the Upper East Side Rich Mom, the “pizza is bae” lifestyle is one role this person was born to inhabit.
Having already “revived” the millennial side-part at the GLAAD Media Awards last month, Lawrence was yesterday afternoon photographed strolling around New York in a pair of “millennial socks”—the ankle-length iterations that have fast become the latest pawn in Gen-Z’s war on old people aesthetics. It is—according to those born after 1996—considered beyond the pale to wear a sock that hits below the shin. Lawrence wore those anklets with The Row’s Lucca moccasins and a school-girl miniskirt with a leopard print Mehry Mu bag and a Tiffany & Co. link station necklace.
