Jennifer Lawrence didn’t actually understand plot of controversial film even after sleeping with director

Despite previously making valiant attempts to describe its meaning, Jennifer Lawrence has admitted she didn't have a clue what was going on in one of her movies – despite being in a relationship with the director.

While many Hollywood A-listers like to take the very demure, very mindful approach to publicity, Lawrence is known for not holding back.

She’s rarely afraid to keep it real, whether it’s wearing flip flops underneath a fancy red carpet gown or having us all in stitches with her chat about STI fears.

Jen also previously hit headlines after candidly revealing she had no idea what was going on in a film she starred in – despite having an unexpected advantage.

The actor played the titular character in 2017 psychological horror Mother! by Darren Aronofsky, featuring alongside the likes of Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The movie followed a young woman whose peaceful life with her husband in their rural home is suddenly disturbed by the arrival of uninvited guests.

It’s so steeped in symbolism, that many people came out of the cinema scratching their heads.

And it turns out Lawrence felt the same, too, having admitted in a 2023 interview that she was still baffled by the plot.

Oh, and that’s in spite of the fact she was actually sleeping with director Aronofsky at the time…

During an appearance on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live in 2023, Lawrence explained where she'd place herself on a 'scale of one to totally confused'.

The now-34-year-old said: "I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had the CliffsNotes. So… five? Or a four."

She then joked: "But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!"

Host Cohen quickly confirmed: "F*** the director?" to which Lawrence replied: "Yeah!"

At the time of the film’s release, Lawrence had tried desperately to explain the film, telling Deadline in 2017 that it’s ‘all an allegory’ with a much deeper meaning.

She said: "It’s all metaphor that’s tied to this narrative. It’s the creation and decimation of the universe, including Biblical themes and creation of religion.

"I represent Mother Earth, and what I have is Baby Jesus – if we guess the religion.

"I play this woman who has built this home from the ground up. I’m in a relationship with an artist who is obsessed with needing appreciation from me first, and then I’m not enough."

Of course, Lawrence and Aronofsky ultimately weren’t meant to be, as they split in November 2017 after a year of dating.

She went on to marry Cooke Maroney two years later, giving birth to their son Cy in February 2022.
