Get ready to dive back into deep-sea chaos — Jason Statham’s blockbuster hit The Meg is officially returning to streaming on HBO Max starting July 1.
The 2018 sci-fi action thriller sees Statham face off against a prehistoric mega-shark, and while critics weren’t impressed (Rotten Tomatoes: 44% critics, 47% audience), fans worldwide swarmed to theaters, helping the film rake in an impressive $527 million on a $130 million budget.
Statham, known for his no-nonsense action roles, later revealed to Collider that the final cut of The Meg was “radically different” from the version he originally signed on for.
“The movie changed a lot after filming,” he said. “What we ended up with was totally unexpected.”
Despite the behind-the-scenes shake-ups, The Meg was successful enough to spawn a sequel — 2023’s Meg 2: The Trench, which underperformed slightly but still grossed $397 million globally.
Will There Be a Meg 3?
While Warner Bros. hasn’t officially greenlit a third installment, the franchise’s $800M+ combined box office haul makes it a strong contender. But one thing is clear: no Statham, no shark sequel. If he doesn’t return as Jonas Taylor, the future of The Meg might sink fast.
📅 Don’t miss the return of The Meg — streaming on HBO Max starting July 1.
