Hugh Laurie’s Friends Character Said Everything We Always Thought About Rachel & Ross’ Relationship

Friends had a variety of special guests, among them Hugh Laurie, who, in his very brief appearance, said everything we all thought about Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel’s (Jennifer Aniston) relationship. Two decades have passed since Friends ended after 10 successful seasons, but the show is still quite popular, not just due to its incomparable legacy, but also thanks to streaming platforms making it accessible to a wider audience. However, this has also brought to light some of the show’s biggest flaws, as well as some fun details that could have been easily missed.

Throughout 10 seasons, Friends followed the many ups and downs of Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Ross, and Rachel in all areas of their lives. However, despite all of them being main characters, Ross and Rachel more often than not were in the spotlight because of their chaotic relationship. Ross and Rachel became the main couple of Friends and their relationship has caused controversy for years, but one minor character played by a special guest said everything we always thought about them.

Friends season 4 was one of the show’s most chaotic seasons as it was the one where Ross met Emily (Helen Baxendale), the niece of Rachel’s boss. Ross and Emily quickly bonded, so much so that they decided to get married so they didn’t have to keep traveling back and forth between New York and London, despite only going out for six weeks. Ross and Emily decided to marry in London, so the rest of the group had to travel there – except Phoebe, who was pregnant with her step-brother and his wife’s triplets, and Rachel, who chose not to go.

However, Rachel realized that she was still in love with Ross and flew to London to let him know. Sitting next to Rachel was an unnamed English man played by Hugh Laurie, who was annoyed by her incessant tapping on her lap. Rachel apologized and started telling him why she was traveling to London, but he put his headphones on. Rachel ended up telling her whole story to the guy sitting on the other side, but Laurie’s character could still hear everything. Even more annoyed than he was at first, the English man called out Rachel for trying to ruin Ross’ wedding.

Rachel defended herself, arguing that Ross had to know how she felt, but the man told her there was no point in that because Ross was in love with Emily, and she was a horrible person for wanting to ruin what could be the happiest day of his life – and the cherry on top was him telling Rachel she and Ross were clearly on a break. Rachel didn’t understand why what she was about to do was wrong until she saw Ross happy, but her presence caused a major disaster at the wedding.

Laurie’s “Guy On The Plane" Was A Reminder Of How Complicated Ross & Rachel Were

In just a couple of minutes, the Guy On The Plane was able to see what viewers had already realized in four seasons: how complicated and toxic Ross and Rachel’s relationship was. Ross had an obsessive crush on Rachel when they were in high school, but she never knew until they reunited now as young adults. Rachel and Ross eventually got together, but the latter’s jealousy ended their relationship and led to the famous “we were on a break” moment. A lot has been said about Ross’ actions in his relationship with Rachel, but the latter also had her questionable moments.

Flying to London to come clean about her feelings for Ross is one of Rachel’s worst decisions, and as seen in her brief interaction with Laurie’s character, she only thought about herself, even assuring the man that Ross wasn’t in love with Emily. Ross and Rachel did more harm to each other than good throughout Friends, and fans can only hope that they finally had a healthy relationship after the show ended.
