Harry Potter TV series will shoot next summer in same UK studios as films

The new Harry Potter television series will shoot next summer in the same UK studios as the original films, HBO Max has confirmed.

The new show is expected to run for seven seasons, with each adapting one of the books in J.K. Rowling’s series. It was recently announced that the show would see Succession duo Francesca Gardiner as its writer and showrunner, and Mark Mylod as director on multiple episodes.

Earlier this week (December 3), it was revealed during a technology and media conference held by Wells Fargo that the upcoming series had been pushed back until 2027. Warner Bros. Discovery global streaming chief JB Perrette said of the move: “As you look at ’26 and into ’27, you begin a 10-year journey on the Harry Potter series, which we’re super excited about. And I’d argue, may be the biggest event by the time we get to that series.”

Now, HBO Max have confirmed that the new series will begin filming next year at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden – the same location as the series of films starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were filmed.

On X HBO Max wrote: “Wands at the ready. The upcoming HBO Original Series, #HarryPotter, will be filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden with production beginning in Summer 2025 and coming to Max.”

So far, no one has been cast in the upcoming HBO series, though open castings for the series leads opened in the UK and Ireland in September.

Fans have been discussing the possibility of Cillian Murphy taking on the role of Voldemort  since September and now Fiennes, who played the villain from Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire onwards, has endorsed Murphy.

When asked by a fan while making an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live what he thought about the possibility, Fiennes replied: “Cillian is a fantastic actor. That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favour of Cillian. Yeah.”

It comes after it was recently reported that Mark Rylance is reportedly the frontrunner for the role of Dumbledore in the HBO series.

It was also recently confirmed that Rowling still remains “fairly involved” in the forthcoming series, despite her past anti-trans sentiments and many fans previously objecting to her involvement.
