In FRIENDS, several Hollywood A-listers made cameo appearances, but only a few manage to grab the attention of the viewers with their storylines. While Bruce Willis as Paul was a fan favorite, another one of Rachel’s love interests could have shifted her storyline in an unexpected direction. The actor in question was Dermot Mulroney, who played Gavin Mitchell in the show.
Gavin was introduced in the later seasons of the sitcom. But his chemistry with Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel quickly became popular, with many viewers wanting her to end her on-again, off-again romance with Ross. But the makers decided to waste his character, and Gavin was given just a three-episode arc in the sitcom.
FRIENDS Completely Wasted Dermot Mulroney’s Gavin in the Sitcom
Jennifer Aniston‘s Rachel had quite an interesting love life on FRIENDS and has dated several characters on the show. Majorly, throughout the ten seasons run, her on-again, off-again relationship with Ross grabbed everyone’s attention. However, there were also some characters, for whom the audience pitched in as well. One such character was Gavin Mitchell played by the rom-com legend Dermot Mulroney.
The actor made an appearance in the ninth season of the show as Rachel’s temporary replacement at Ralph Lauren. The duo does not get on a good start, as she finds him rude. While she appreciates his kindness later on when he takes care of Emma, Rachel gets annoyed when Monica invites him to her birthday party.
It is here that their dynamic shifts, when he gifts her a scarf, and the duo share a passionate kiss in the balcony – a moment that Ross witnesses as well. But much to the dismay of the viewers his story was written off the show abruptly only after three episodes. His character could have definitely changed the course of Ross and Rachel’s storyline in the show. Further, it could have ended entirely differently if she had in fact ended up with Gavin.
While FRIENDS failed to utilize his genius, Mulroney’s career only went up after the sitcom. He has been part of successful projects like New Girl, with the most recent being Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone But You to name a few, which has crossed more than $220 million worldwide.
Courteney Cox Spills Tea on What Jennifer Aniston Has Kept From the FRIENDS Set
Monica and Rachel were super close on FRIENDS, in reality as well both Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston share a very special bond. So, much so that Aniston is also the godmother of Cox’s daughter Coco.
While both the actresses’ have continued to support each other after the conclusion of the show, in an interview Cox spilled some beans on how Aniston kept tons of clothes from the sitcom.
She not only raided Rachel’s wardrobe but took some from Monica’s as well. She added in an interview:
She (Aniston) took a lot of Monica’s dresses, and she’ll say, ‘Oh yeah, I used to wear this on Friends.’ And I mean, it looks great on her. She has a great figure and she’s adorable. But I’m like, ‘Why would you take this floral little prairie dress from Friends?’ But she holds on to everything.
Cox added that while Aniston took some of Monica’s clothes, when she tried to wear an outfit of Rachel’s, it did not go as planned. Cox added:
I remember I was late to the game, but Jennifer had this outfit on. She was wearing a really cool jacket with a tank top and a pair of jeans. I just thought, ‘God, she looks great.’ The shoulder pads are really sharp. So I thought, ‘You know what, I’m going to get that jacket.
It was a really cool jacket with shoulder pads, but her stylist told her that people were not wearing such jackets anymore.
