Despite the controversial run, Disney is still promoting Snow White. The movie didn't end up making the studio a profit, and will head to digital soon.
Snow White is Disney's latest live-action remake of its early animated fairy tales. Starring Rachel Zegler as the Disney Princess and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, the movie could've used some magic to escape all the backlash. However, after a disastrous box office run, Disney is continuing to promote the live-action film as it heads to digital platforms on May 13, and People just unveiled a deleted scene showing the Evil Queen summoning the magic mirror.
The short clip, available on the outlet's page, takes place at the beginning of the film, introducing Gadot's character before she becomes the Evil Queen. The deleted scene is titled "Anguish and Opportunity," and shows a young Snow White and the King, "heartbroken" after the death of Snow White's mother. "But where most saw anguish, one saw opportunity," the narrator says at the beginning of the clip, which switches from Snow White and the King to Gadot's character.
"Spirit in the Magic Mirror, come from the farthest space through wind and darkness, I summon thee," the Evil Queen says as she calls for the magic mirror.
The narrator continues, "The Sorceress possessed a Magic Mirror that would answer but one simple question," before the Evil Queen, before she becomes the queen, asks the famous question from the fairy tale: "Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?"
As the Magic Mirror praises her looks, he continues, "In grief, the King has lost his way. Your beauty's power will have great sway," the spirit predicts, as the deleted scene shows the Evil Queen arriving at the castle and revealing the King's reaction to her beauty.
Disney's Snow White is a live-action reimagining of the studio's 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, based on the 1812 story by The Brothers Grimm. The new version is directed by Marc Webb, and stars Zegler, Gadot, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, a new character who serves as Snow White's love interest based on the Prince.
Snow White's Controversies Led to a Disappointing Box Office Run
Since the announcement that Zegler would take the role of the Disney Princess, the live-action film was covered in backlash. The actress, who has Latina descent, drew the ire of many commenters as the character was described in the original fairy tale as having skin "as white as snow." Snow White further features controversies over Zegler's comments about the original story being outdated, the use of CGI instead of hiring actors with dwarfism, Zegler's support for Palestine, and Gadot's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
This hurt the film's odds at the box office. With a reported budget of $270 million due to several delays, Disney's Snow White only grossed $201.7 million worldwide, nowhere near enough to make a profit. Snow White wasn't a hit with the critics, either, as the live-action remake received a "rotten" score of 40% from the critics, but a more enthusiastic 72% from the audience, despite the completely different IMDb review-bombing score.
Snow White is currently out in theaters and will head to digital platforms on May 13.
