Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Divorce Is Still Being Hashed Out 8 Years Later: ‘It’s Not Done Yet’ (Source)

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are slowly approaching a divorce settlement nearly eight years after their breakup.

"Both sides are still talking," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE of remaining issues in the divorce negotiations, "but it's not done yet."

Jolie originally filed for divorce back in September 2016. The actors, who shared the screen in 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith as well as 2015's By the Sea, were declared legally single by a judge back in 2019.

The exes have six kids together: Maddox, 22, Zahara, 19, Pax, 20, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, who turn 16 on July 12.

A source recently told PEOPLE that Pitt, 60, has "virtually no contact" with their adult children, but per his agreement with Jolie, "he has visitation with the younger kids." In recent months, his interaction with the younger children has been more limited because of his filming schedule. (Pitt has been filming F1 in the U.K., and was recently spotted spending time with girlfriend Ines de Ramon at the British Grand Prix.)

Meanwhile, Jolie, 49, is "very happy and content with her life," another insider told PEOPLE, adding that she is "focused on her kids and work." She will soon star as Maria Callas in the biopic Maria, directed by Pablo Larraín, and directed the upcoming film Without Blood starring Salma Hayek-Pinault.

Pitt and Jolie also continue to be at odds in a separate legal battle over the French winery they once owned together. Pitt has sued Jolie for selling her shares in the company, claiming she did so without his approval and defied an agreement they allegedly had.

Jolie's lawyer in the winery case said in a May statement that she "looks forward to the eventual end of this litigation with its false narratives that continue to hurt the family and interfere with their ability to heal."

Back in 2017, Pitt told GQ that he and Jolie were at a point in the divorce proceedings that "we've been able to work together to sort this out."

"We're both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, 'No one wins in court — it's just a matter of who gets hurt worse.' And it seems to be true," he said at the time. "You spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you're right and why they're wrong, and it's just an investment in vitriolic hatred. I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees."

Now, this past April, a source said the "long-drawn drama with Angelina used to really get to [Pitt], especially the custody drama and abuse allegations."

"It's been very stressful for him to have to defend over and over again," the source continued. "But since things don't seem to change, he's trying to move on with his life."
