Back in 1999, we learned that God is actually Alanis Morissette. But, it's been along time since Dogma has been in theaters, and currently, you can't even stream the movie. Directed by Kevin Smith, it's fair to say that Dogma is a modern masterpiece, albeit an elusive one. It was also a film that didn't get the best of reviews when it first hit theaters. But now, over two decades since its original release, that's changing.
As of this writing, the current critical score on Rotten Tomatoes for Dogma is 70 percent. And, this relatively high score is partly because the film suddenly has a lot of new critics reviewing it. Why? Well, Dogma is heading back to theaters on June 5, 2025, meaning that for a generation (or two) of people who've never seen it, the movie will blow everyone's minds again.
Starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as fallen angels Bartleby and Loki, Dogma is a hilarious romp all about religion, life, and the basic definitions of right and wrong.
At the time, Dogma was a who's who of the 1990s, featuring Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, and Janeane Garofalo. It also featured the characters of Jay and Silent Bob, played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself.
Of course, these characters had a whole life of their own, starting with the film Clerks in 1994, and later Mallrats in 1995 and Chasing Amy in 1997. But Dogma is almost certainly the best of the Jay and Silent Bob films, and if you somehow missed this back in the day, now is the perfect time to experience the madness of this film.
It may seem a little quaint now, but in 1999, this movie was everything.
